Member Question - How To Control Putting Speed

Member Question: I have a hard time with hitting two putts in a row the same speed. Even on the practice green, my putting speed is horrible. I can try to hit a ball about 15 feet and try to hit a second ball to barely touch it. The second ball rarely comes close to being close to the first ball. Sometimes it is long and sometimes it is short. The result is just not consistent. Any putting tips to help me with my putting speed?

Thank you for your question. When students are that inconsistent with speed of putts or distance control, it is typically because they are not hitting the putts solid.

Now, what does that mean in English? In hitting any shot solid it means that you hit the club-face in the same spot on every stroke. If you need to know how to find the sweet spot on your putter, it is easy to do. Simply let take your putter by the grip and let it dangle using only your forefinger and thumb. Next take a golf ball and start tapping the putter face. Once the club head goes straight back without twisting the face, you have found the sweet spot of your putter.

There are various putting aids that you can use to determine if you are striking the ball in the same place on the putter face during each stroke. Some are very inexpensive. An example would be taking baby powder and placing some on the face of your putter before you make a few strokes. If you already do not have some in the house, a bottle of baby powder is very inexpensive. You will not only want to notice if you are missing the center towards the heel or the toe of the putter but you will also want to watch where the ball is making contact top to bottom of the putter face.

You can also purchase some golf putting aids that resemble rails that you can attach to your putter face. You simply attach it to your putter face with the adhesive on the back of the training aid. These usually come in groups and will vary in size which varies the difficulty. Obviously the closer the rails are together, the more difficult making a stroke that propels the ball on the correct line is to do. If you end up hitting one of the rails, the ball will jump in a crazy direction because the ball hit one of the rails.

Many times students that struggle with putting speed do not have a good shape to their stroke. When students struggle like this, they are usually taking the putter back a lot farther than they are taking it on their through stroke. This means the putter is decelerating or slowing down through the impact zone. This makes hitting two putts the same speed very difficult.

If you are struggling with their putting speed, make sure that you are hitting the ball in the sweet spot and that you are accelerating the putter through the impact and you will improve your game and lower your scores.
